Description

Key Characters: Leaves glabrous, inflorescence whooly (tomentose), shrubs or subshrubs, leaves broadly ovate, petioles stout, 6 mm.

Growth Form: Prostrate shrub, < 1 m. high, either simple or sending out one or two ascending branches.

Stems: Unbranched or sparingly branched, outer bark gray, peeling off in shreds.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades broadly ovate, or sometimes obovate, the largest about 5 cm. in diameter Apex rounded or sometimes obtuse to acute. Base cuneate to cordate. Upper surfaces glabrous, light green, and shining lower surfaces glabrous, dull and glandular. Margins lightly induplicate (revolute). Several pairs of raised veins radiating from base; midrib impressed above, prominent beneath. Petioles stout about 6 mm. long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences of 2–5 pairs of cymules fully developed. cymes large; peduncles densely woolly; 2.5 cm. in length; bracts broadly ovate to suborbicular, 5–10 mm long, 3–5 mm wide. Flowers red, bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic; pedicels 2–8 mm long, 1–2 mm wide; hypanthium 3–7 mm high, 3–8 mm wide. Sepals very woolly, except the short, triangular lobes, which are almost glabrous, but glandular. Petals red, broadly obovate, about 6 mm. in length, glandular on the outside, ciliate. Stamens numerous 2.5 cm. long, dark red. Ovary nearly superior, deeply immersed in the bottom of the calyx, its disk-like top very glandular and resinous. style up to 2.5 cm long, not enlarged at the stigmatose apex.

Fruit: Capsules slightly included to exerted; fruiting hypanthium 3–8 mm long and wide; pubescent or glabrous.
